Love in Portofino   ( 2013/04/24 )

Andrea Bocelli, one of the world's most famous tenors, delivered a sumptuous, breathtaking performance in an open air concert devoted to lovers hugged in the beautiful surroundings of the Piazzetta in Portofino, Italy. The netizens commented, “The world’s greatest love song performed at such an intimate occasion, against the stunning backdrop of sunset over Portofino, is an experience not to be missed.”

Undeniably, Portofino is a magical place! Embraced by dramatic tree-lined cliffs, it has provided such a stunning setting for the concert, allowing the audience to be truly immersed into the romantic and affectionate atmosphere. The concert was captured live and screened worldwide during the St. Valentine’s Day period in 2013 under the beautiful name of “Love in Portofino”.

Portofino was founded by the Roman and was named Portus Delphini, or Port of the Dolphin, because of the large numbers of dolphins found there. The town’s natural harbour supported a fleet of fishing boats which still exist today; but as tourists began to arrive in the late 19th century, more and more vacation houses were built and it has become a renowned tourist destination nowadays.

What makes Portofino so attractive? The answer lies within the blend of Italian quaint little fishing town and hilly landscape which is so unique and intimate in character. While Portofino is just a tiny little town at the end of narrow winding scenic road, there is plenty to keep tourists busy during their stay. Activities including shopping, sight-seeing, water-sports and Italian fine dining within the town are among the top choices for visitors. People might say Portofino vacations can often be an expensive proposition, but for those who are more budget-conscious, there are also hostels and cheaper rooms in the nearby downtown. Portofino is a destination for all budgets. You don’t have to own a private yacht because “water buses” can take you from any places along the Italian coast to Portofino.

If you are nature lovers, there are a number of good hiking trails both along the coast and on inland routes, many offering spectacular views. Portofino has a famous botanic park. The northern part of the park is wooded with a variety of trees while in the southern part you will find more wildflowers, bushes, and grasslands. Olive trees are cultivated in many places and close to the villages you may see orchards and gardens.

Summer is the best time to visit Portofino, in terms of both weather and activities available. In addition to the annual events occur in Portofino, there are a number of other interesting events taking place nearby, including the Valle Christi Festival (music, dance, performance), the Palco sul Mare (concert, carbaret performance), the Tigullio Exhibition (arts and crafts) and the Zegna Trophy (regatta event). All these add up to the beauty of Portofino as the most stunning and energetic Mediterranean ports.

Back to Hong Kong, the city is also famous for its harbour and possesses many picturesque shoreline and islands. Do we really have to go all the way to Portofino for such an experience?
