Island Culture as Reflected by Tin Hau Festival ( 2011/05/24 )
| Last weekend, it was a big festivity of Lamma Island - the Tin Hau Festival. Crowds were everywhere, particularly in Sok Kwu Wan, whether it be in the restaurants or outside the temple. There were also a wide range of activities that livened up the community, like lion dances parade, traditional Cantonese opera performances and so forth. Lamma Island, where three Tin Hau Temples are located, attaches great importance to Tin Hau Festival which celebrates the birth of Tin Hau, the goddess of the Sea and protector of fishermen and sailors. This is very important in traditional island community where fishing is the main occupation. Tin Hau Festival is celebrated in anticipation of safety, security, fine weather and full nets during the coming year. Every year, Lamma Island hosts a vivid celebration. Locals adorn boats with colourful ribbons praising the goddess for past protection and praying for future luck. Besides, lion dances parade and Cantonese opera performances are held on the island which draw all the locals and visitor to the events to show their respects to their goddess.
