Special Tourist Destinations: Corsica and Sardinia (Part 1)   ( 2013/01/08 )

People nowadays look for special travel destinations where one can experience the unique culture, tranquility and breathtaking landscapes. It is easy to find such characteristics in European islands, such as Corsica in Southern France and Sardinia in Italy. In fact, Hong Kong, as a world-renowned Asian cosmopolitan city, has similar outlying islands that also carry distinctive local characteristics which can produce a brand new travel experience.

Corsica, nestling in southern France, is the birthplace of Napoleon and a well-known leisure resort. The island offers excellent scenery as it is covered by mountains and surrounded by the sea, thus enjoying a thriving tourism industry. Corsica is also famous for its marinas, which attracts thousands of visitors every year. The island retains lots of historical monuments, such as National Museum of the Bonaparte Residence, Porto-Vecchio, which was once a military site, as well as the small fishing villages on the bushy mountains of Cap Corse. Besides, the Scandola Nature Reserve situated on the west coast of Corsica was inscribed on the World Heritage List. All these reflect how the island respects its own culture and history.

Sardinia in Italy is also a very famous leisure destination. It is easy to find a variety of leisure facilities and some low-density villas along its coastline, attracting tourists from all over Europe for vacation. Nevertheless, the indigenous people of Sardinia still live peacefully in the inland areas and small fishing villages, maintaining their unique living style, language, food and custom. For example, there are still many farmers and shepherds there raising pigs and sheep, and local residents producing their own cheese and honey as food. Their peaceful lives are not a bit influenced even though Sardinia has now become a tourism hotspot.

Lamma Island, in fact, has the potential to become a leisure resort just as Corsica and Sardinia. More will be explored in our next blog. Stay tuned!
