Showcase of Sustainable Communities – Vauban in Germany   ( 2014/06/12 )

After paying a visit to Kronsberg in Germany, we have stayed behind in this lovely country to explore yet another successful green community, Vauban of Freiburg. With its plan well executed, Vauban boasts surplus energy houses, where each house’s photovoltaic system generates more energy than it consumes. The seamless combination of optimised passive house design and environmental friendly materials also makes the houses available within a reasonable market price.   Vauban positioned itself as a mixed residential project occupying an area of 38 hectares, serving more than 5,500 residents. It has adopted a wide variety of green strategies, including:   Energy District heating provided by wood chip burning and cogeneration (CHP) and solar collector Waste heat from these processes is used to provide hot water All houses are/will be built at least with low energy standard plus at least 100 units with “passive house” or “plus energy” standard   Transportation Reduced number of private cars by 40% to 50% in the community Bus-line, tram-line and train-line link the district to the Freiburg city centre All necessary amenities are within walking distance   Social Infrastructure A variety of housing types, such as houses or 4-storey apartment buildings, allowing a greater social diversity Different housing forms, such as private or subsidised housing provided Streets are lined with trees, and are mostly used as social gathering spaces   Next, we will be heading to another European country – Sweden!
