World's First Lagoon Power Plants Unveiled in UK   ( 2015/04/08 )

Recently, The United Kingdom has announced the world’s first tidal lagoon project. There will be 6 lagoons in total, 4 in Wales and 1 each in Somerset and Cumbria. The series of 6 lagoons could generate 8% of the UK's electricity for an investment of £30bn. Each will require engineering on a grand scale, surrounding sea body with a 5-mile long seawall.

Tidal energy will be generated when there is a difference in water level inside and outside the lagoon, by using the weight of the water to power turbines and make energy. The Cardiff lagoon could include up to 90 turbines set in a 14-mile (22-kilometre) breakwater around Cardiff Bay and could generate power for about 14 hours each day.

Planning application for the project is expected in 2017 and could be generating power by 2022, if approved.
