Cowen Chiu as Member of Panel of Judges in the Asia Boating Awards 2012 ( 2012/05/22 )
| Hosted by Asia-Pacific Boating and China Boating magazines, Asia Boating Awards is one of the most acknowledged and prestigious awards in the yachting industry of the Asia-Pacific region today. The gala awards night in this year was held on May 10, 2012 at Grand Hyatt Hong Kong. Mr. Cowen Chiu, Chairman of Windsurfing Committee of Asian Sailing Federation, President of Windsurfing Association of Hong Kong, Commodore of The Hong Kong Sea School, and Honourable Commodore of The Baroque of Lamma Yacht Club, had been invited to participate in the judges’ panel for the Awards. Commenting on Hong Kong’s yachting industry, Mr Chiu said, “Hong Kong has its own geographical advantage for yachting. Unfortunately, no new marina has been built since 1990s, resulting in overcrowded docks and long waiting lists for berths. This has seriously obstructed the development of yachting industry in Hong Kong.” Mr. Chiu pointed out that these confinements have limited Hong Kong to hold major international sailing events like Volvo Ocean Race and Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. These mega events could have provided a lot of jobs and business opportunities for Hong Kong. “We are not only losing the golden opportunities on economic growth and job creation, but also failing from enhancing Hong Kong’s international status in tourism and yachting. Therefore, new marinas with international regatta standards would be necessary for Hong Kong,” said Mr. Chiu. Asia Boating Awards attracts a lot of yacht owners and yacht industry professionals to submit their nominations for the region’s best in yachts, builders and events every year. The nominees in each category are judged by an independent panel of industry experts who select the final winners.
